Under Minnesota law, you have a right to equal pay for equal work. Under the federal Equal Pay Act, an employer may not pay different wages to individuals of different genders for equal work on jobs requiring equal skill, effort, and responsibility performed under similar working conditions. Private employers with one or more employees are prohibited from using discriminatory practices based on the sex or gender of employees by paying employees of one gender at a rate less than is being paid to employees of a different gender for equal work that requires the same skill level, effort, and responsibility. Employees who file suit based on Minnesota’s equal pay for equal work law may be awarded damages in the amount of the unpaid wages. An employer may not retaliate against you by firing or non-renewing you based on a wage discrimination complaint. If you believe you have experienced wage discrimination because of your gender, contact an attorney.
