Pregnant individuals are protected by an amendment to Title VII called the Pregnancy Discrimination Act (PDA). Your employer may not discriminate against you because of pregnancy, childbirth, or related medical condition. Pregnant individuals have the right to be treated equally in all employment practices, including hiring, promotions, and receipt of benefits. If there are benefits for persons experiencing an inability to work, pregnant individuals must be covered by the benefit programs as well. In Minnesota, pregnancy is not a valid reason to not hire or to terminate an employee. If your employer fails to provide you with appropriate accommodations during or after your pregnancy, you may have a claim. If you believe you have been discriminated against because you are (or were) pregnant, please contact an attorney a soon as possible.
